Une grenouille se trouve paisiblement en train de nager dans une marmite remplie d'eau froide.
Sous la marmite, un feu est allumé, et l'eau commence à chauffer doucement.
Peu à peu, l'eau devient tiède. La grenouille trouve cette sensation plutôt agréable, et elle continue de nager sans se méfier.
La température continue de monter progressivement.
L'eau devient maintenant chaude, légèrement plus chaude que ce que la grenouille apprécie, cela la fatigue un peu, mais elle ne panique pas pour autant.
Au fil du temps, l'eau devient vraiment chaude, et la grenouille commence à ressentir un inconfort grandissant. Pourtant, elle s'affaiblit et reste immobile, tolérant la chaleur croissante.
La température continue de grimper, jusqu'à ce que le moment arrive où la grenouille se retrouve tout simplement en train de cuire, jusqu'à sa mort.
En revanche, si cette même grenouille avait été plongée directement dans de l'eau à une température de cinquante degrés, elle aurait réagi instantanément en donnant un coup de patte vigoureux pour se propulser hors de la marmite.
Cette fable illustre le fait que lorsque le changement s'opère lentement et de manière imperceptible, il échappe souvent à notre conscience et ne suscite guère de réactions, d'opposition ou de révolte.

The frog finds this feeling quite pleasant and continues to swim without suspicion. The temperature keeps rising slowly. The water becomes hot, slightly warmer than what the frog enjoys, making it uncomfortable, but it doesn't panic. Over time, the water becomes really hot, and the frog starts feeling increasing discomfort. Nonetheless, it weakens and remains still, tolerating the rising heat. The temperature continues to climb until the moment comes when the frog is simply being cooked, leading to its demise.
In contrast, if the same frog had been immersed directly in water at a temperature of fifty degrees, it would have instantly reacted by giving a vigorous kick to propel itself out of the pot.
This fable illustrates the idea that when change occurs slowly and imperceptibly, it often escapes our awareness and doesn't prompt much reaction, opposition, or revolt.
